CWE provided topographic surveying for Caltrans as part of their $400 million reconstruction of a portion of the US 50 freeway.  The project included over nine miles of freeway reconstruction from Watt Avenue to the Interstate 5 interchange.  Project features included new High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, soundwalls, road surface replacement, road and bridge widening, striping, signage, ramp reconfiguration, and drainage and utility relocation.  CWE completed approximately seven miles of field survey along the project, locating topographic features prior to construction took place.  Surveying took place within the outside travel lane, the freeway shoulder, and the undeveloped portion of Caltrans right-of-way beyond the traveled way.  CWE also verified control points needed for the highway scanning vehicles which would collect additional data within the traveled lanes.  A three-man survey crew was onsite nearly every weeknight – work was primarily performed overnight to increase safety and efficiency – for a three-month period.  Of paramount importance throughout the project was safety.  CWE had to carefully follow special Caltrans procedures throughout the fieldwork to ensure the safety of every crew member throughout the duration of the project.  CWE used Trimble equipment to conform to the standards of Caltrans surveying and provided all the survey information to the client in a convenient package that could be seamlessly incorporated into their design software.  Additionally, the schedule proved very demanding, and CWE accommodated this schedule by dedicating specific personnel exclusively to the project throughout the field survey portion.  Once construction began on the project, the client utilized CWE for quality verification surveying, where we resurveyed stakes in the field to provide an extra level of assurance that they were placed within the tolerances allowed for highway construction.
